Continuing Revelation
God speaks to all peoples in their own time and place and culture. Truth is not limited to our one church nor to the Christian religion. We understand inspiration and revelation to be gifts of God’s Spirit.
Scripture is an indispensable witness of the human response to God’s revelation. Churches created their canons of scripture from texts that they believed included vital messages for living life missionally.
Read literally, ancient text is dead (2 Corinthians 3:6). Interpreted irresponsibly, scripture has done much harm and damage to races, genders, and classes of peoples throughout history.
But when responsibly interpreted with guidance of the spirit and meaningfully applied in life, scripture can become revelatory anew. We believe that it is the calling of each generation to witness to enduring principles in their own new context.
We further believe in an open canon. Our church president has a special calling as a prophet to provide inspired counsel to church. Then, as a prophetic people, we are called to discern, through elected representatives at our World Conference, whether the text should be canonized as new scripture in our book of Doctrine and Covenants.
