“May we continue to provide a sanctuary to those seeking refuge”
– Linda Hewitt, North Bay, Ontario
I am sharing this testimony because although it has been quite a year for me personally, l can’t deny that God has always been with me.
Having been born of godly parents, l have always been affiliated with the Community of Christ. At twelve years of age l had a diving accident at Camp Noronto which could have caused disastrous results for me. However, a person stated he dreamed the night before of the raft surrounded in blood and was compelled to prayer that nothing bad would happen to the campers. Years later l was told this story by Andrew Beaudin, an evangelist in the church. He had been reluctant to share it at the time in case l was afraid or couldn't grasp the significance.
As a young woman l was attracted to a man named Mike Hewitt who eventually became my husband. We had several experiences together that confirmed that God was directing our lives. One occurred after l had two ectopic pregnancies. We felt God with us in what could have been a very lonely time. Fortunately, we were able to adopt six children who enriched our lives tremendously.
Wherever we lived we were always welcomed into Community of Christ congregations. They always provided us with love and a place of belonging. When we decided to work for the church after Mike retired, we found many wonderful people along our path.
Community of Christ has always provided a spiritual home for me and l hope that it will continue to be a blessing to all who encounter it. May we continue to provide a sanctuary to those seeking refuge. I trust they will also feel God's blessings as we offer love and support to them. In return, may we be willing to accept the blessings they will bring to us. Today we must be prepared to enlarge our community by reaching out to those in need. May we become a true Community of Christ in the world.
